Democrats Play Politics, Ignore Economy

Americans are begging Congress to use the lame-duck session to focus on jobs and the economy. Unfortunately, Democrats would rather play politics and consider special-interest legislation than take action to prevent tax hikes, lower the deficit, and spur job growth.  Republicans respond:

Today in Washington, D.C. - Nov 30, 2010 - Lame Duck Continues! Democrats' Priorities Still Out Of Touch

Yesterday, the Senate rejected a motion to suspend the rules with respect to an amendment offered by Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) which would have eliminated the onerous 1099 reporting requirements on small businesses in the Democrats’ health care bill. A motion to suspend the rules for an amendment from Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) was also rejected. The Baucus amendment was similar to the Johanns amendment but was not offset.

Also, yesterday, the Senate invoked cloture 69-26 on the Harkin substitute amendment to S. 510. The Senate then proceeded this morning to expanded government overreach and reduced individual freedom in America over the food we grow and raise by voting 73-25 to pass S. 510, the food safety and FDA reorganization bill. Prior to final passage, the Senate rejected two motions to suspend the rules to adopt amendments from Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). The first would have instituted an earmark moratorium and the second was his version of a food safety bill. All motions to suspend the rules require 67 votes to be adopted.

The Senate rejected (39-56) a Republican proposal to ban the practice of earmarks, which would have effectively forbidden senators from considering legislation containing earmarks like road and bridge projects, community development funding, grants to local police departments and special-interest tax breaks.

Other actions in the Senate are now delayed until later today as Republican and Democrat leaders meet with President Obama at the White House with the Republicans understanding the position of the American people and Obama pushing his liberal agenda. Republicans will urge President Obama to heed the message sent by the American people earlier this month: cut spending, stop all the tax hikes, and help create jobs now.  Positive outcome from this meeting is doubtful. Obama and his key administration officials are clearly rejecting the results of the 2010 elections as a call for a change of direction.

With Congress back from its Thanksgiving break, Democrats once again have an opportunity to prove that they heard the message Americans sent Washington on election day by focusing on the priorities of the American people: helping the economy and preventing a massive tax increase in January. Yet Democrats continue to show that their priorities are strangely out of line.

As Republican Leaders write in The Washington Post today, “Republicans heard the voters loud and clear. They want us to focus on preventing a tax hike on every taxpayer, reining in Washington spending and making it easier for employers to start hiring again.” They point out, “Despite what some Democrats in Congress have suggested, voters did not signal they wanted more cooperation on the Democrats' big-government policies that most Americans oppose. On the contrary, they want both parties to work together on policies that will help create the conditions for private-sector job growth. They want us to stop the spending binge, cut the deficit and send a clear message on taxes and regulations so small businesses can start hiring again.”

But consider the priorities Democrats are acting on this week. The Senate began the week by returning to, and passing, a bill that expands the FDA’s regulatory authorities. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has not announced what the Senate will turn to next, but he’s previously indicated that he wants votes on ending the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and a controversial amnesty bill known as the DREAM Act. But Democrats still have no plan on what to do on the looming tax hike at the end of December.

Meanwhile, the White House seems equally out of touch. In the midst of a diplomatic crisis concerning leaked cables and secret documents and serious issues on the Korean peninsula, President Obama has been pushing ratification of his nuclear weapons treaty with Russia, and prodding Congress on the DREAM Act, while the Pentagon discusses repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

The Lame Duck period is also a dangerous period when members of Congress rejected by their constituents or those retiring opt to vote to advance radical agendas which they know cannot be easily overturned in the new session of Congress once these agendas have been signed into law. And so they will push through as much "garbage" legislation as possible much of which we will not know about until later next year. One agenda that is being pushed is a bill which could lead to abortions for female veterans could come up for debate on the House floor as early as today. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does not currently provide abortions and abortions are currently excluded from the VA health benefits package, because abortion is excluded from the scope of "general reproductive health care" that is authorized by P.L. 102-585. But that exclusion does not extend a prohibition to other authorities created by earlier or later legislation, so this bill (H.R. 5953) could lay the groundwork and legal precedent for the VA to provide abortions in the future, according to the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus.

As Leader McConnell observed in a speech on the Senate floor today, “It’s unclear how long our friends across the aisle will continue to resist the message of the election and cling to the liberal wish list that got us a job-killing health care law, a ‘cap-and-trade’ national energy tax, an out-of-control spending spree, million more jobs lost, trillions more in debt, but not a single appropriations bill to fund the government or a bill to prevent the coming tax hikes. With just a few weeks left before the end of the year, they’re still clinging to the wrong priorities — instead of preventing a tax hike, they want to focus on immigration and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell —  and, maybe, if there’s time left, see what they can do about jobs and the economy. Indeed, their entire legislative plan for the rest of the lame duck session appears to be to focus on anything except jobs — which is astonishing when you consider the election we’ve just had.”

Arkansas Muslim Man Arrested in Smyth Co. for Possession of Explosives

Act for America: [Excerpt:  "Abdullah has been charged with one felony count of throwing a missile at a vehicle and four counts of manufacturing and possessing an explosive device."]
WSET-TV
November 30, 2010

Smyth Co.,VA- An Arkansas man was arrested, and charged with multiples counts of manufacturing and possessing explosive devices after a traffic stop in Smyth County.

Around 10:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving State Trooper L. J. Testerman was traveling through Chestnut Ridge Road and Grubmore Road when he observed someone throwing some type of bottles out of a black Ford Ranger pickup. Moments later the trooper heard a loud bang come from the pickup.

Trooper Testerman stopped the pickup truck on Chestnut Ridge Road. After a search of the vehicle the officer found explosive devices.

21-year-old Emad Hatem Abdullah of Little Rock, Arkansas was arrested, and taken to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon where he is being held on $5,000 bond.

Abdullah has been charged with one felony count of throwing a missile at a vehicle and four counts of manufacturing and possessing an explosive device.

A 20-year-old passenger in the pickup truck from Marion, Virginia was not charged. The Smyth County Sheriff's Office assisted State Police with its investigation into the incident.

Immigration by the Numbers -- Off the Charts

Roy Beck and chart
Roy Beck, Numbers USA Video:A startling look at how U.S. immigration will add 300 million people to the country this century if policies are not changed.

This is NOT the new "gumballs" video sent you a month ago. (That one already has a half-million views.) The gumballs video dealt with ethical considerations of immigration and world poverty. This dramatic presentation of the latest Census data raises serious questions about the ability of the country to achieve environmental sustainability and to meet the quality-of-life infrastructure needs of the national community.

Busted Lip

by William Warren: My latest cartoon is a joke about Obama’s busted lip.

But even today, Obama "bowing to Republican political pressure and growing budget concerns, President Obama will announce a pay freeze for all civilian federal workers (including the Department of Defense)."]

Today in Washington, D.C. - Nov 29, 2010 - Lame Duck Continues! Government Aims to Take Control of All Farming

News Alert: The Washington Post: Today, "bowing to Republican political pressure and growing budget concerns, President Obama will announce a pay freeze for all civilian federal workers (including the Department of Defense)."

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO-06) responded: “No doubt, this does not go far enough but his pay freeze is a positive first step by a President who has added over 100,000 new federal employees at wages and benefits much higher than are available in the private sector for doing similar work.”  Although the following bill by Coffman will not see the light of day in this Congressional session, it may find favor if reintroduced it in the next session of Congress: H.R. 6134 would have furloughed  federal civilian employees to non-consecutive two weeks in 2011, reduced salaries of members of Congress by 10%, and  correspondingly reduce appropriations for salaries and expenses for offices of the legislative branch. Result: saving  taxpayers more than $5.5 billion.  And additional benefit: the bill and other actions will send a warning to government employees that we expect them to reduce not expand government.  Future bills should reduce the number of Czars  (funded offices and departments) and reduce the number of both paid and unpaid White House and Congressional staff members.

House Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-OH) responded: “I welcome President Obama’s announcement, and hope he will build on it by embracing much-needed steps to reduce both the size and the cost of government, including the net federal hiring freeze Republicans propose in our Pledge to America. Without a hiring freeze, a pay freeze won’t do much to rein in a federal bureaucracy that added hundreds of thousands of employees to its payroll over the last two years while the private sector shed millions of jobs.
------------
Congress returns for continuance of the Lame Duck session and liberals still have control. Before going on the Thanksgiving recess, the Senate voted 57-27 to proceed to S. 510, the food safety and FDA reorganization bill - titled the "Food Safety Modernization Act Expected Today." A bill that will affect American's rights to even grow their own food (plants and animals). To paraphrase Glen Beck, thsi bill at minimum increase food prices and at worst ruin farming. Anytime the government interferes in farming, the American people suffer. Last Tuesday on the Dave Elswick radio show (KARN 102.9 FM) Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) said he would vote "Yes" on this bill.

As identified in Politico, at 5:30 this evening, Mark Kirk, heir to President Obama's former seat, will be sworn in as the new Republican Senator from Illinois, narrowing the Democratic majority at a very inconvenient time for its current leadership. "His arrival will narrow Democrats’ majority in the Senate to 58-42, meaning they’ll now need at least two Republicans to reach the 60-vote threshold to move forward on legislation. Two other new senators – Democrats Chris Coons of Delaware and Joe Manchin of West Virginia – were sworn in shortly after the midterm election, but the balance of power remained unchanged in the Senate because they replaced Democrats."

Congress is scheduled today at 6:30 PM, the Senate to vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the Harkin substitute amendment to S. 510. If cloture is invoked, the Senate will then consider 4 motions to suspend the rules to allow amendments.

The motions will be offered by Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE), for an amendment to eliminate the onerous 1099 reporting requirements on small businesses in the Democrats’ health care bill, by Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), for an amendment to scale back the 1099 requirements, and by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), for his own substitute amendment to the bill and for an amendment to ban earmarks. Each motion to suspend requires 67 votes to be approved. Senators will vote on all four motions and then on final passage of S. 510.

Lame-duck Democrats enter tomorrow’s meeting of congressional leaders at the White House showing “ The LA Times identified that there are "no signs of relenting” on their plan to impose a job-killing tax hike on families and small businesses. Even after Americans clearly rejected job-killing policies such as this one, Democrats reportedly continue to cling to these tax hikes at all costs, allowing the uncertainty gripping families and small businesses to continue. Reuter's idnetifed that one senior Senate Democratic aide went so far as to ask aloud: “How the hell should we know when we will figure this out?” All this dithering and doubling-down only validates the American people’s repudiation of Washington and politicians who refuse to listen.

As today’s Wall Street Journal notes, “when Mr. Obama and his top advisers signaled willingness to give ground after the election, they were slammed by liberals who viewed it as a capitulation.” The ‘capitulation’ charge was led by union bosses.  Typical, but unfortunate: taking cues from liberal special interests instead of listening to the American people is a major reason why Democrats find themselves in their current predicament.

House Democrats retained Speaker Pelosi as Democratic Leader in part because they want her to serve as a “counterweight” should President Obama express willingness to work with Republicans on the people’s priorities. Her stance on raising taxes, according to the AP, is a “recent example” of this retrenchment. This job-killing tax hike shouldn’t be used as a test case for Democrats’ ability to obstruct critical progress on creating jobs and cutting spending.

Republicans heard the voters loud and clear: end the uncertainty Washington, help small businesses and get our economy back to creating jobs. Democrats and Republicans don't have to wait until January to stop all the tax hikes and start cutting spending. We can – and should – get started right now. The clock may be winding down on Democrats’ hold on power in both houses of Congress, but there’s still time to do the right thing.

Liberals Hate Tax Facts

Herman Cain, Contributing Author: Here we go with the liberal rhetoric again. You’ve seen the Democrats whine that keeping the “Bush tax cuts” would stuff the pockets of the richest Americans, while doing nothing to help the middle class. But that simply isn’t the truth.

Here’s the truth: Congress is not voting on tax cuts, but rather, whether or not they should allow tax increases to take effect January 1, 2011.

The Democrats have tried to convince the American people that the Republicans want to pass “tax cuts for the rich.” But, in reality, conservatives want to provide a bit of economic certainty by maintaining the current tax rates for all. In fact, Speaker-elect John Boehner (R-Ohio) says that keeping these tax rates is the most sensible way to “reduce the uncertainty in America and help small businesses begin to create jobs again.” This may come as a shocker to liberals: He’s exactly right.

If the Democrats block the attempts of Republicans to permanently extend the current tax rates, taxes will rise for the first time in 14 years! And this will certainly stall economic recovery, as the Heritage Foundation projects that letting these rates expire would cost an average of 799,000 jobs annually from 2013-2019. If the Democrats continually promise that their number one focus is job creation, why are they insisting upon blocking legislation that would do exactly that?

The Democrats in Congress resist the facts and the truth. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) wants to introduce two different pieces of legislation – one that would include maintaining the current tax rates for the middle class and another for the highest-income filers, many of whom include small business owners. He and his liberal colleagues are insistent upon making this class warfare legislation instead of economic growth legislation.

Most people can see through this. We see that letting the current tax rates expire would simply cause taxes to skyrocket for everybody, especially the small businesses responsible for most of the new jobs created. And that’s no stimulus!

The rhetoric of liberals isn’t working. They figure that if they keep saying it, enough of it will stick with enough people who will believe it. But guess what! Most of us aren’t that stupid!

Just like we understood that when President Obama and liberals in Congress said health care “reform,” they really meant a takeover of the American health care system. And we also knew that “cap and trade” were code words for “energy taxes.” And we also realized that bailouts and the stimulus agendas were simply an unacceptable expansion of government. The Democrats must face the facts: We will not be fooled!

We understand that raising taxes in a deep recession would only further complicate our economic woes and worsen conditions for the American families struggling to make ends meet. We recognize that policy, not politics, will help steer this country on the right path.

We know that ignoring the facts doesn’t make the facts go away. Most Americans realize that the surest form of economic stimulus is for the federal government to get out of the way. Raising taxes gets in everybody’s way, especially businesses. Tax facts don’t lie. And most Americans know the truth.

Congress Should Read the Constitution

Gun Owners of America Video: In January, the new Congress will be sworn in, and each member will swear an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Judging by how often Congress operates outside the bounds of the Constitution, one wonders if the members actually ever read our most important founding document.

If there is a mandate for the Congress coming out of the 2010 elections, it is that the Constitution must be made relevant again. And what better way to begin the One Hundred Twelfth Congress than to have read aloud, in both the House and Senate, the Constitution in its entirety.

The House and Senate will waste hours congratulating sports teams, naming post offices, and various other meaningless tasks. Even worse, it will spend much more time doing things for which it has absolutely no constitutional authority.

Update: The Postmaster General's Golden Parachute

Reference prior articles:
- Another Government Failure: The Postmaster General's Golden Parachute
- Post Office to Lose $238 Billion - Big Gov't Has No Business Sense

It appears that the outcry expressed over executive compensation at the USPO will have an impact on future bonuses and compensation at the USPO. However, as reported in the following update, the Postmaster General John E. Potter will keep his 2010 bonus and $5.5 million retirement. "Such a country" - rewarding failed performance. Of course this outcome can be expected under the Obama administration mantra of "jobs were saved" - government jobs!

Update 11/24/2010 via The Washington Times: "Outgoing U.S. Postmaster John E. Potter, who earned nearly a quarter-million dollars in incentive pay in 2010 on top of a $273,000 salary, is telling fellow Postal Service executives that from now on bonuses and salary increases will be tied to the agency's financial condition. Mr. Potter said in a memo obtained by The Washington Times that for fiscal 2011, the Postal Service's board of governors decided that 'all future officer executive pay and incentives will be linked to the Postal Service's financial condition.' . . . It's unclear whether the pay policy will affect top executives who already have employment contracts that include incentive payments. In one recently approved contract with Paul Vogel, the $245,000-per-year president of shipping and mailing services, a provision states that he'll receive, at minimum, a performance incentive of 25 percent of his basic salary at the end of each year. . . ." [No change though for US Postmaster John Portter - he keeps all his $228,000 in incentive bonus for 2010 and $5.5 million in deferred retirement package.]

Happy Thanksgiving 2010

President Obama's 2010 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation
Observation: This year, unlike his 2009 proclamation, President Obama does mention the gifts of a gracious God: "As Americans gather for the time-honored Thanksgiving Day meal, let us rejoice in the abundance that graces our tables, in the simple gifts that mark our days, in the loved ones who enrich our lives, and in the gifts of a gracious God.  Let us recall that our forebears met their challenges with hope and an unfailing spirit, and let us resolve to do the same."

Joe the Plumber Subjected to Smear Campaign by Government Officials

Joe Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber.
Photo by Bill Smith, ARRA News Service
Bill Smith, Editor: The below article on BigGovernment.com addresses actions by government officials to smear the name of a private citizen who was basically unknown outside of his circle of friends and clients before candidate Barack Obama appeared on his street campaigning. That citizen was Joe Wurzelbacher, now known to most of us as “Joe the Plumber.” Joe was vaulted into the lime light when he was recorded by news services asking then presidential candidate Barack Obama a question.

The article caught my attention for two reason. First, I met and spend time alone interviewing "Joe the Plumber" when he was supporting a candidate for US Senate. The photo on the right was taken at the time. Joe made it clear that he was not being paid for his endorsement and support. He also identified that he was not only supporting and endorsing the Republican candidate that day but that he was also supporting a Democrat candidate in another state. Even though I didn't agree with his second endorsement, I liked Joe because he was listed his requirements of what he expected from people running for office. Also, unlike most political supporters, he said why he was there, he opened the floor to the people to question both him and the candidate.

Second, what happened to Joe Wurzelbacher, if left unaddressed, opens the door for all citizens to be subjected to a smear campaign by government officials for merely questioning a politician.

Private Citizen Subjected to Smear Campaign by Government Officials

by Tom Fiton: Can a private citizen be subjected to a smear campaign by government officials for merely questioning a politician? That’s the issue at the heart of the lawsuit on behalf of Joe Wurzelbacher, known to most as “Joe the Plumber.”
A federal district court (erroneously in our view) dismissed Joe’s claims. Judicial Watch lawyers have since filed an appeal for Mr. Wurzelbacher in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Here is why we’re asking the appellate court to review the lower court’s decision, according to our brief, which you can read in its entirety here:
Ultimately, review of the issues in this case is important, not just to hold these state officials accountable for this abuse of their power and the harm inflicted on Mr. Wurzelbacher, but because it goes to the heart of free expression and political participation in this nation.

Private citizens should not have to worry whether their letter, phone call, or simple question to a political candidate will cause them to be targeted for investigation. Mr. Wurzelbacher and all Americans should have the freedom to openly participate in their government without fearing reprisal from partisan government officials.
Now let’s quickly review the facts of this lawsuit. As you may recall, during the 2008 presidential campaign, Mr. Wurzelbacher was throwing a football with his son in the front yard of his home when then-candidate Barack Obama and his campaign entourage passed by. Mr. Wurzelbacher, an employee of a small plumbing business, was given the opportunity to ask Obama a question about his tax policies affecting small businesses. Obama responded by famously saying, “It’s not that I want to punish your success; I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you — that they’ve got a chance at success, too. I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

This exchange between Obama and Mr. Wurzelbacher “went viral,” exploding into the news and on the web, garnering significant public attention. In fact, the exchange even made its way into the third presidential debate held on October 15, 2008.

Clearly, “Joe the Plumber” had struck a raw nerve with the Obama campaign. People saw the president’s comments for what they were: an endorsement of socialism. And Barack Obama was both embarrassed and on the defensive just weeks before the election.

Well, just days after Mr. Wurzelbacher asked his question the three highest ranking employees of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services at the time – who all just happened to be supporters of Obama – launched a dirt-digging expedition to try to smear “Joe the Plumber.” They instructed staff to access confidential office databases to retrieve sensitive information about Mr. Wurzelbacher, in an effort, it seems, to punish him for daring to question candidate Obama.

An Ohio Office of Inspector General report would later conclude that these investigations by the three government officials had “no legitimate agency function or purpose” and constituted a “wrongful act.”

Mr. Wurzelbacher’s suit was filed on March 5, 2009. And on August 4, 2010, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss the lawsuit, prompting the appeal.

There are two constitutional rights at issue here: The First and Fourteenth Amendments.
As our lawyers explain to the appellate court, there is a three-part test to determine when there has been a violation of the First Amendment: “1) the plaintiff engaged in constitutionally protected activity; 2) an adverse action was taken against the plaintiff that would deter a person of ordinary firmness from continuing to engage in that conduct; and 3) the adverse action was motivated at least in part by the plaintiff’s protected conduct.”

The lower court does not dispute points 1 and 3. However, the court ruled that Mr. Wurzelbacher did not effectively plead an “adverse action.” Judicial Watch disagrees. As alleged in detail in our brief, “the knowledge of Defendants’ improper investigation, prompted by Mr. Wurzelbacher’s First Amendment activities, caused him to suffer ‘emotional distress, harassment, personal humiliation, and embarrassment.’” Such injuries have been determined valid and compensable by court precedent (including precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court).

Regarding the Fourteenth Amendment, specifically the “right to be let alone,” the District Court ruled that the right to privacy is only triggered when the individual’s interests at stake relate to “those personal rights that can be deemed ‘fundamental’ or ‘implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.’”

Fair enough. But then the court advanced the argument that the improper dirt-digging done by the three government officials did not rise to that level. Again, we disagree: “It is certainly ‘implicit in the concept of ordered liberty’ that government officials cannot set out to violate the law and a person’s privacy by conducting improper investigations for improper reasons.”

This is an important lawsuit, especially as the Obama administration continues to compile an “enemies list” and to retaliate against those who disagree with its now all too apparent socialist agenda.

Dems' Gas Tax Hike Would Fuel Tea Party Anger

Chris Slavens
By Chris Slavens, Guest Author: The average price of a gallon of gasoline is $2.87, a number which will continue to climb as the Federal Reserve’s “quantitative easing” scheme lowers the value of the dollar. That’s a 50% increase from only two years ago; in the weeks following the presidential election, the average price was about a dollar lower. But according to some Democrats, today’s price isn’t high enough.

Senator Thomas “Tom” Carper (Democrat-DE) wants to raise the federal gasoline tax by twenty-five cents over a period of two years, increasing the current rate—18.4 cents per gallon—by 136% to 43.4 cents per gallon. The last time the tax went up, in 1993, it was increased by a mere 4.3 cents.

Has Carper filled up recently? Does he drive? Or are his vehicles powered by pixie dust and wishes? The senator travels to Washington, D.C., by train regularly, so perhaps he can be forgiven for apparently forgetting that most Americans are already feeling pain at the pump, and will continue to struggle to afford fuel even without a mind-blowing 136% tax increase.

Then again, he might not be forgiven. With the exceptions of Wilmington, Dover, and a handful of overdeveloped beach towns, Delaware is a rural state. It’s not uncommon for residents to drive twenty miles to work, and in many cases “work” consists of serving summer visitors, as tourism is vital to the First State’s economy. One could almost believe that Carper is intentionally trying to anger his constituents, who will have an opportunity to reelect or fire him in less than two years.

Democrats defend the proposed increase by arguing that revenue must be generated somehow, somewhere, so why not at the tens of thousands of gas stations across the United States?

Their feeble argument reflects their thorough disconnection from the people they pretend to serve. The T-E-A in Tea Party stands for “Taxed Enough Already,” and the results of the recent election can only be interpreted as an unsubtle backlash against big government and tax-and-spend policies, yet still Democrats (and, curiously, some Republicans) insist on raising revenue to fund a predetermined budget. While working families scrounge and cut back, the government spends their hard-earned wealth freely—which is one of several reasons that the country entered a recession in the first place.

The federal government does not have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem.
In the real world, a household earns a certain amount, and bases its budget on that income. Why should Congress be above such a common-sense approach to handling finances?

The Democrats’ gas tax hike is not only utterly unnecessary; it will harm a vast majority of Americans, stifle the recovery and growth of businesses big and small, and possibly derail efforts to rejuvenate the economy.

Americans expect to see unfeigned efforts to cut spending, eliminate unnecessary agencies and programs, and reduce the seemingly infinite reach of the federal government, and while only an imbecile would believe that this can happen overnight, the average voter is not so naïve as to be fooled by half-hearted attempts to alter minor details of the progressive agenda, like rearranging the deck furniture on a sinking ship. Fundamental, far-reaching reform is craved, which is why a proposal to do the opposite—to raise taxes for no reason—seems more like a poorly-timed joke than a serious suggestion.

Obama said that electing Democrats would be like putting a car in “D,” to drive forward. He just neglected to mention how expensive driving would be with his party behind the wheel.

Helping TSA: An Alternative to Body Scans

Finally - A great alternative to TSA body scanners at airports . . ..

The Israelis are developing an airport security device that eliminates the privacy concerns that come with full-body scanners at the airports.

It's a booth you can step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on you. They see this as a win-win for everyone, with none of this crap about racial profiling. It also would eliminate the costs of a long and expensive trial. Justice would be swift. Case closed!

You're in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter an announcement comes over the PA system . . . "Attention standby passengers we now have a seat available on flight number XXXX. Shalom!"
Ozark Guru: The above was posted as humor; but it does seems that some techno geek could come up with this type of approach.

And don't give me, "terrorists or stupid people carrying, consuming or putting explosive devises in their body cavities have rights." Terrorists and / or stupid people with explosive devises attempting to or even flying have cost us enough: lives, time, money, economic disruption, anxiety and expansion of government intrusion. But in all honesty, what I am most unforgiving of the terrorist for is their being responsible for the present sanctioned big government TSA actions to be able to fondle - make sexual contact - or take, record and view pornographic images of my 3 young granddaughters, 2 young grandsons, my daughter-in-laws and my wife.

Does anyone else see a conflict? Warrantless wiretaps of foreigners was bad but fondling and pornographic imaging of a free and independent American citizens (our family, friends, and neighbors) by the U.S. Government is okay. Sending military to a Afghanistan where many Afghans do not know about 9-11 due to lack of communications and see us as invaders like the previous British and Russians armies is okay, but putting military on the U.S. border to stop all infiltrating illegals - many of whom are terrorists and criminals - is bad. Water boarding suspected foreign terrorists and requiring them to be tried by military tribunal is bad. But fondling or naked imaging of our grandchildren, our children, our spouses, active duty military, veterans, fire fighters, law enforcement, government workers (many with clearances far above any TSA employee), civic and community leaders, pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, teachers, professors, doctors, nurses, business owners, elected officials (except of course those flying Air Force One, Two and Pelosi's jet) members of Congress, Judges, Governors, attorney generals, Mayors, etc. is okay. Calling a lie the truth does not make it true.

"Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress toward more pain." - 1984 by George Orwell

TSA: Solution to the Healthcare Crisis

Curtis Coleman
Curtis Coleman, Contributing Author:  The solution is right under our noses, and we’ve been griping about it! With the federal government spending millions of our taxpayer dollars pretending to keep us safe on airplanes using full body scanners and full body pat downs, the government has presented us with the opportunity for an extraordinary efficiency. (When’s the last time you saw “efficiency” and “government” used in the same sentence? There’s a tip-off to just how good this is.)

With only a modicum of additional training – perhaps one additional day – TSA agents can be trained to perform dozens of preventative healthcare screenings, with only the slightest additional intrusion and inconvenience to airline passengers.

Just think of all the medical exams that could be easily added to the security screening process…
  • Ear, nose and throat exams
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Breast exams
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) evaluations
  • Prostate exams
  • Foot exams for diabetics
  • And so many more!
And the new full body scanner equipment can surely be easily modified to also perform:
  • Chest and lung x-rays
  • Brain tumor detection
  • Gallstone detection
  • Mammograms
  • And again, so much more!

ID documents can be required to include inoculation and vaccination information. If a passenger hasn’t had their flu shot for the season, wham, it’s done right there on the spot. And dip tanks can be added to the security line for people who are discovered to have STDs.

Millions, yeah, probably billions can be saved annually just on doctors’ office visits and trips to emergency rooms. Imagine the savings, and this is just the beginning! Passengers discovered to have expensive medical problems can be “weeded out” on the government’s national digital medical records database. Think of the $billions the government can then save on single payer healthcare plans. We could probably cover hundreds of thousands more illegal aliens.

And what a boon to the airlines. They can offer free medical exams when we buy a ticket. (Well, for a limited time only, then there would have to be an additional charge, except at Southwest Airlines, of course.) Our medical insurance could offer us the choice of (1) an annual physical at our doctor’s office or (2) a free airline ticket to grandmother’s house during the holidays.

Of course, this plan will produce such enormous reductions in American healthcare costs, these full body scanner and full body pat downs will have to be migrated to trains, and subways, and federal buildings, and…gosh, where would we have to stop?

So the next time you’re worrying about the escalating costs of healthcare while you’re waiting for your exam in an airport security line…hug a TSA agent! But guard your rear…you may get a needle stuck in it (or something worse.)

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. – Benjamin Franklin in Memoirs of the life and writings of Benjamin Franklin (1818).

Story of Small Business: When Costs Compete With Passion

Bankrupting America Video:

Sixteen years ago, Barb started Black Eyed Susan -- her store of hard-to-find garden and home accessories -- to fulfill her passion, to have a positive impact on a community, and to enjoy a lifestyle of freedom.

Today, Barb may close the doors on what she loves to do. In an already difficult environment for small business, government-augmented uncertainty threatens to raise the cost of Barb's retail business to unbearable levels.

Specifically, the little-known 1099 provision in the healthcare reform bill would burden her so that much she might stop doing business.

As Barb says in the video, "I hope when I close the doors to this store...it's because I decided it's just time to move on...not because I felt like my hand was forced."

Barb's story is Part 2 of our documentary series "The Story of Business," a joint project of Public Notice and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council.

Constitutional Convention - Not A Good Idea!

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. - Hosea 4:6 [Covenant Wisdom]

Defending Our Constitution
Dr. Bill Smith: The following email has been making the rounds as a ruse to take America off track and to open our Constitution to a complete makeover. Having served 22 years in the military, I took an oath as a commissioned office that I stand by today: ". . . that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same." Thus, I must speak out against this populace treat to stir up emotions with the intent to destroy our Constitution.

While I "may" agree with the intent of the identified constitution amendment mentioned in the email, the real danger lies in the proposed idea of a Constitutional Convention.
First The Bogus Email:
This keeps appearing with more states signing on! We are on our way! A Constitutional Convention is on the horizon. . . . Governors of 35 states have already filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention . . . .

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest was to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform ... in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law.

I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop.

A Constitutional Convention - this is a good way to do that. It is an idea whose time has come. And, with the advent of modern communication, the process can be moved along with incredible speed. There is talk out there that the "government" doesn't care what the people think. That is irrelevant. It is incumbent on the population to address elected officials to the wrongs afflicted against the populace...you and me. Think about this . . . .

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months and 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure. . . .

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution:
"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States ..."
The above email is designed to mislead people. It is meant to lead them to believe that they could call for a Constitutional Convention which would make only this one constitutional change. Then we would have this amendment to the Constitution which would keep those rascals in Congress in line and we would all be better off. The progressives, a lot of liberals, and radical groups would love readers to believe this. Why? Because it is not true and they have an agenda.

If a Constitutional Convention were legally convened, its delegates would have absolute authority without oversight by anyone outside of the convention. The delegates would create a new Constitution to replace the present Constitution. Do you believe that such a Constitution would be as well founded and as wise as the one creased by our reasoned founders? Most likely, we would cease to be a Republic. Note these words in the email, "incumbent on the population to address elected officials to the wrongs afflicted against the populace...you and me." Those words are pandering to emotions without the email explaining the ultimate outcome. It wants you to start thinking about a Constitutional Convention. There are other emails and venues promoting the same idea.

To reiterate, a Constitutional Convention would have no legal oversight and could eliminate or modify any or all of the bill of rights. They could eliminate those "nasty "NOTs" which presently limit the authority of the Federal government and establishes boundaries to their interfering with our lives. Also, new rights or restrictions on citizens could be established. While laws can and have placed restrictions on American citizens, they presently can be challenged under the present Constitution in court or repealed by Congress. The Constitution was meant to stand the test of time until the United States of America ceased to be Republic. Are we ready to surrender our Republic?

The Convention could add all kinds of new populace elements. I have heard students at a local university (and they all vote) claim that every person should be guaranteed a free college education. Also consider that there are a lot of people out there who believe that your property should be open to their use. And, on it goes.

Most likely, one major change would be changing the process of electing a president by eliminating the Electoral College. If this ever happens, it means that the major cities and a few states would solely determine who would be president. Consider that the majority of those who are on welfare and other subsidies reside in these cities and states. Thus, they would only elect a President who was supportive of more government handouts and funding their programs with other people's money. There is already a movement which advocates that state legislatures agree to join together with other states and to cast their electoral votes according to the popular vote outside their state and not according to the vote within their state. Our forefathers provided the Electoral College to give each state balanced representation in electing a president.

After a Constitutional Convention, we could even find ourselves with another form of government, maybe a Parliamentary form or a government with less checks and balances. The present concept of three branches of government (Congress, the Court System, and the Executive Branch) could all be eliminated. Our unique Constitution and our present system of government could be wiped out without recourse. We could wind up with unrestricted government and no bill of rights. An unrestricted government could be unleashed to drag us further into socialism or a dictatorship. The new Constitution could even recognize Sharia law or International law.

Ask yourself, "Why do liberals love the idea of a "constitutional convention?" Did you notice the line in the email, "I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop." This could be a line right out of the progressive's playbook. The hidden agenda of the email was not to promote the amendment but to encourage people to move toward a constitutional convention. A place where others espousing goodwill will have the opportunity to argue away the current Republic, the protection of our rights and freedoms, and the checks and balances that our forefathers gave us.

Consider the warning of Benjamin Franklin. His words were spoken at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. "A lady asked Dr. Franklin, Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy. A republic replied the Doctor if you can keep it." [Notes by Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland’s delegates to the Convention; first published in The American Historical Review, vol. 11, 1906, p. 618.]

There exists a need for documented arguments / responses on this and other subjects relative to the Constitution. People need access to "right minded" information so that they can make sound decisions and fend off with confidence bogus ideas and communications designed to entrap citizens who are angry with the actions and behavior of their government. Threats like those identified above should be addressed in position papers by think tanks like The Heritage Foundation and The Curtis Coleman Institute for Constitutional Policy.

However, each of us bears a responsibility to educate ourselves. Listening to friends and discussing issues within groups may be interesting, but, it can also lead to "group think" when not grounded in truth and facts. A good starting place is for citizens to read the source documents of our founding fathers and the various debates and changes over the last 223 years since the close of the Constitutional Convention.

In 2012, we will celebrate 225 years of our present Constitution. We will also participate in the pivotal 2012 elections. Please commit now to reading the U.S. Constitution. Then, consider reading your state's constitution. Let's not chance false ideas of rewriting the U.S. Constitution. Let us hold our elected officials accountable to the Constitution that they swore to uphold.

OBAMA, MUSLIMS AND THE HAJ

By William J. Murray, Religious Freedom Coalition: President Obama had a message to those traveling for the "Haj" or pilgrimage to Mecca, considered a sacred duty of every Muslim: "On behalf of the American people, we extend our best wishes during this Hajj season - Eid Mubarak and Hajj Mabrour." The pilgrims of the Haj had a message for Obama as well: "God is the Greatest", "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" were among anti-Western, anti-Christian and anti-Semitic slogans chanted in unison as nearly 2 million Muslims gathered in the Desert of Arafat near Mecca according to ABNA News:
The pilgrims chanted anti-US and anti-Zionist slogans during the ceremony also attended by the Supreme Leader's representative for Hajj affairs, Hojatoleslam Ali Qazi-Asgar.

'God is the Greatest', 'Death to Israel', and 'Death to America', were among slogans chanted by the masses in unison as they gathered in the Desert of Arafat, 20 kms (12 miles) from Mecca, for a day of prayer and meditation.

The faithful - men clad in two-piece seamless white shrouds and women all covered except for their hands and faces to symbolize equality -- converged on Arafat.  A message by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for the Hajj pilgrims was also read by Qazi-Asgar during the ceremony.

CAIR SUES TO FORCE SHARIA LAW - Almost 70% of Oklahoma voters approved the "Save Our State Amendment," which required that judges not consider non-US laws or sharia law in determining the outcome of cases before them. The Council for American - Islamic Relations (CAIR) immediately filed a lawsuit to stop the implementation of the law. If Muslims do not intend to overturn the Constitution of this nation and install Islamic law, why would they file such a suit? The answer is simple and that is that most Muslims in the United States do not respect our laws and want to replace them with Islamic laws that all Americans would be forced to adhere to.

MICHAEL MOORE WANTS 111 STORY MOSQUE - Leftwing nut job and radical movie producer Michael Moore has his insanity on display for all to see at his blog page. This week he promoted moving Feisal Rauf's mosque from its proposed location to the actual site of the Twin Towers. He also proposed building a 111 story mosque, taller than Freedom Tower, at the current location chosen by the mosque promoters. His logic sort of falls in line with that of George W. Bush, that Islam is a religion of peace and we must help them overcome the image of Islam as a terrorist based religion. NOTE: In the last week there have been 30 Islamic terror attacks in 12 different nations with 83 dead and more than 200 severely wounded.
