That statement alone could serve as a fair synopsis of Huckabee's full speech, a speech in which he laid out his conservative credentials and called on fellow GOP members to hold fast to the "principles that caused many of us to become Republicans." Judging by the captive looks and attentive stillness, the message resonated with many in the crowd, . . . Between the jokes and anecdotes, Huckabee touched on several key national and international issues. First and foremost, he said Congress and the next president must acknowledge that the greatest threat facing the United States comes from "Islamic jihadists" bent on destroying the nation. He also spoke about the importance of halting illegal immigration and maintaining a strong military, his commitment to the pro-life cause, and his belief the federal government should be kept small and efficient, with the most control in the hands of state and local officials closer to home.
