Sources inside the beltway revealed that a Senate Republican leadership elections will be held next Thursday, Dec. 6 (9:30 a.m.), at a special Conference meeting. The session is being held to fill any leadership vacancies resulting from Minority Whip Trent Lott's (MS) resignation next month. Currently, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona is running uncontested for Republican Whip. With Sen. Jon Kyl (AZ) advancement to this position his current post of GOP Conference Chair becomes available. Sens. Lamar Alexander (TN), Richard Burr (NC), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX) are running for Sen. Kyl’s current post of GOP Conference Chair. Sen. John Thune (SD) appears to be eying a possible bid.
