Tony Perkins, FRC: In a powerful call to conscience, the Vatican's second-highest doctrinal official delivered a speech yesterday that decried the impact of cultural decay. Archbishop Angelo Amato, secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, made his remarks in response to Italy's debate over homosexual "rights." Pointing to media stories as one example of society's moral collapse, he said the news "often seemed like a perverse film about evil," which "remains almost invisible" because odious deeds are portrayed like "expressions of human progress." Calling abortion "terrorism with a human face," he condemned the politically correct terminology used for modern ills. "For example, abortion is called 'voluntary interruption of pregnancy' and not the killing of a defenseless human being. [A]n abortion clinic is given a harmless, even attractive, name: 'center for reproductive health' and euthanasia is blandly called 'death with dignity,'" he said. At a time when churches are threatened for speaking the truth, we applaud Archbishop Amato for his leadership and honesty. We should all be emboldened and encouraged to follow in his example.
