FRCAction Update: Rather than fight an expensive, drawn-out lawsuit from the ACLU, two North Carolina counties have voted to ban all prayers that invoke "the name of Jesus." Yesterday, despite a room filled to capacity with Bible-bearing citizens, the Yadkin County Board followed in the footsteps of neighboring Forsyth County and caved to pressure to offer only nonsectarian prayers. The Alliance Defense Fund is fighting a similar battle in Transylvania County, N.C., where the Board stood up to the ACLU and voted unanimously to preserve its tradition of opening meetings in prayer. For too long, groups like the ACLU have intimidated public officials into surrendering their constitutional rights because of a misinterpretation of the Establishment Clause. To stop these anti-religion opportunists in their tracks, contact your leaders and ask them to sponsor the Public Expression of Religion Act, now before Congress. This bill would ensure that no monetary damages, costs, or attorney's fees would be awarded to the litigants who bring cases against a local or state official who expresses or accommodates religion.
