Arkansas: 10 Year Government vs. Private Sector Growth / Decline

Americans for Prosperity Foundation: Little Rock, AR – Over the past ten (10) years there have been alarming indicators of growth in Arkansas’ government jobs field. From 2000 - 2010, Arkansas state government has added 27,500 jobs. Meanwhile the private sector has lost 22,900 jobs. That puts Arkansas' rank at 10th for fastest growing government sector in the nation.*

Arkansas Director of Americans for Prosperity Foundation Teresa Oelke stated, "Arkansas government continues to expand, the burden of government on citizens grows heavier. Government bureaucracy comes with more rules, more regulations, and more mandates on Arkansas families and businesses. And that's not to even mention the bloated salaries, ballooning pensions, and unfunded healthcare costs.

"The limited opportunities Arkansans have in finding jobs are directly related to the rapid expansion of government. We rank 39th in the nation in business climate, and we make the top 10 for growing government. I'm not sure I would be giving myself an 'A grade' when it comes to the state's economy."

For perspective, the population of Arkansas grew by 9.07%. This ranks the state 22nd among the states, and is slightly behind the US average 9.71%.**
