One of the main controversies in recent months is what constitutes "socialism" -- and to what degree should socialism be considered acceptable in a large, civilized society. A number of years ago, a noted scientist argued in the media that the more a society grows in size, the more loss of freedom becomes inevitable as a means of preserving society itself. Science aside--or more correctly, "scientism" aside--let's take a close look at what socialism is, and how useful (and appropriate) it is as a means of solving human ills.
