Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: In remarks before the National Press Club, Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) revealed his lack of "due diligence" in performing his responsibility as a Representative for his constituents and upholding his oath of office. In trying to mock his fellow conservatives who say to "read the bill" before voting, Conyers reveals a truth about himself and his party. He isn't up to his job but he has time to speak before the National Press Club, raise money, etc. He is the personification of "show over substance" and of what is wrong in Congress today.

In the below video of his comments, we find Conyers' attempt at mockery turning into truth. He identifies that he sees no point in lawmakers reading the 1,000-page health bill or any other bill unless they have two days and two lawyers to interpret it for them after they read the bill. Mr. Conyers, please listen again to your own statement. Indeed, why should any Representative vote on a voluminous and complex bill without adequate time to fully study and understand the bill and to appropriately represent their constituents?

It is the leadership of Conyers' party who continues to "ram through" costly complex bills that reek havoc on Americans and our economic system. It is the leadership of Conyers' party who denies his fellow Representatives the time to read, comment, and debate on bills and adequate time to obtain input from their constituents. It appears Conyers has admitted that he just sleep walks through voting and votes on bills which he has not read.

Steven Willis at Restate has a few additional questions for Conyers: "Has he read any of the supporting material regarding Judge Sotomayor? Did he read the stimulus legislation? How about Cap and Trade? Rather than spending time speaking at the National Press Club, should he not be reading the things on which he is voting?"

No wonder the TEA (taxed enough already) Party movement is growing. Conyers confirms their worst nightmare. Their Representatives might not be reading the bills. Or, if their Representative wants to read and input on a bill, they are deigned the right to do so. As things are going, the present situation looks like the former USSR where a few Politburo members controlled everything. Contact your Representative and Senators and demand 1) that they evidence support for of adequate time to read the bills placed before them and 2) that they read the bills before they sign them.
