U.S. Rep. John Boozman (R-AR) today signed on to legislation which bolsters the rights of American parents to know if their children have requested an abortion. H.R. 1295, the “Parental Notification and Intervention Act of 2007,” makes it unlawful for any person or organization to perform an abortion on a minor without notifying her parents unless there is proof of abuse by the parent or in the event of a medical emergency. Violation of the law carries up to a $1,000,000 fine and prison time up to 10 years. “Parents should know if their child has requested a medical procedure which presents certain risks to their health,” Boozman, the father of three daughters, said. “Parents are required to grant permission for minors to get their ears pierced, or get a tattoo. It would only make sense a parent should have the right to know their daughter is about to undergo a major medical procedure which could potentially harm their child.”
