From Senate sources: According to the latest Gallup poll, just 23% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing. Gallup writes, “Congressional job approval is essentially the same as it was last month but slightly higher than the 18% reading in August, which matched a 1992 rating as the lowest Gallup has measured since 1974.”The House Judiciary Committee passed a four-year extension of the moratorium on Internet access taxes after defeating Republicans proposals to extend the ban permanently or for eight years. Sens. McConnell, McCain, and Sununu are working to get a vote on a permanent ban in the Senate. National Review Online has an editorial today backing a permanent ban.
Democrat Leaders' Dirty Tricks: Despite repeated promises from Democrats on the campaign trail last year of a return to regular order on legislation, Roll Call reports today that Democrats will again bypass the traditional conference committee on a major piece of legislation. Democrat leaders in the House and Senate will hash out differences between different versions of an energy bill behind closed doors, in the same way that the ethics reform bill was negotiated earlier this year. House Democrats are apparently upset about the lack of conference committees, but have decided to try to blame Senate Republicans instead of their own leadership.
Meanwhile, Americans United for Change, a liberal group running attack ads on SCHIP, gets it wrong in a Kentucky ad claiming that private insurance companies are against the Democrats’ SCHIP expansion.
