Air Force 60th Birthday: The Air Force celebrates its 60th Anniversary, Sept. 18, 2007. On Sept. 18, 1947, W. Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first secretary of the Air Force with the new Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal in attendance.
